If you are unhappy with the size and shape of your lips, lip fillers might be a simple solution that will bring you happiness. As we age, lips deflate and have noticeable wrinkling. This is exacerbated by smoking and sun exposure. Injectable fillers from ZPS help you with this problem by providing a plumper appearance to thin, aging lips. In addition to providing a boost in volume, these lip fillers can also smooth out wrinkles, providing a more youthful appearance that looks natural. And with no downtime or recovery, they’re a great solution for patients who aren’t ready to jump into more extensive cosmetic procedures.
Some of our younger patients at ZPS have never had the full lips they desire. Lip filler can help here as well. Careful and artistic placement of filler can create new plumpness and define new ridges that highlight your lips to give sex-appeal.
At Zenn Plastic Surgery, all lip fillers are performed by our expert injectors, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Michael Zenn and the best nurse-injector in the Triangle, Mary Shaver, RN. Their combined years of experience providing patients with beautiful lips have created a large following at ZPS. People come from all over for our treatment.
The ZPS Approach to Lip Fillers
No two patients are the same, which is why we work with you one-on-one to determine the anatomy of your unique set of lips and which features can be enhanced to give you the most natural and beautiful lips possible. Like artists painting a portrait, the artistic eye and technical excellence of the injector make all the difference. While the choice of product is part of that equation, it actually matters who is holding the syringe for your treatment. There is no substitute for experience.
What Type of Lip Filler is Used?
Most lip fillers used by ZPS contain a primary ingredient known as hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a compound that occurs naturally in the body that helps cells stay hydrated.
Generally, the experts at ZPS use one of the following lip fillers:
- Restylane, which provides definition and lift to the lips without distorting the lips’ natural shape.
- Juvéderm Ultra XC,which features a slightly higher concentration of hyaluronic acid for even more plumping action.
- Volbella, which provides the most natural-looking augmentation with the longest-lasting results.
Of course, there are other lip fillers available, and the experts at ZPS may recommend one of these depending on your particular treatment goals.
What Happens at a Lip Filler Consultation
It is during the initial consultation at the ZPS Raleigh office Mary Shaver or Dr. Zenn will determine the type of lip filler that will work best for you. To determine this, they will ask questions about your goals, take a look at your medical history, and examine your lips to see how they currently look, both in isolation and relative to the aesthetic of your face.
You will also have the chance to look at before-and-after photos of other patients to see what kind of results you like. This can help if you are undecided and need help choosing the best plan of action.
What the Lip Filler Experience Is Like
The lip filler procedure itself is fast and simple. Before the procedure, photos of your lips are taken. A numbing cream will then be applied to your lips and allowed to sit for 10 minutes to take full effect. Lips can feel big at this point but have not changed in size yet. This is similar to the experience after numbing at the dentist and your cheek feels bigger but is not. Next, the injection starts. This occurs with a fine needle to inject the fillers and is relatively painless. The results are immediate. One can even see the result of each injection by directly comparing the “done” side to the non-injected side to truly appreciate the change. When finished your “after” photos are taken. Many of our patients share their results with friends on social media right then and there!
For the first few days after the procedure, your lips may have some swelling and bruising
Lip Filler FAQs
- How Long Do the Results from Lip Fillers Last?
The longevity of lip fillers depends on the product that Dr. Zenn or his nurse injector Mary Shaver R.N. use to fill your lips. Most lip fillers are made with hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body that helps to hydrate the lips. When first injected this substance attracts water molecules which glom onto the filler, giving the lips a plumper appearance. Over time, the body naturally absorbs and breaks down the hyaluronic acid. Once the hyaluronic acid is completely gone, the lips revert to their original appearance. Patients who desire more permanent lip fullness often schedule maintenance injections at 6-month to one-year intervals.
The four most common brands of lip fillers on the market are Restylane, Juvéderm, Vollure, and Volbella. Restylane and Juvéderm last for approximately six months and provide natural plumpness that doesn’t look fake or overdone. Volbella is a product typically used to smooth out vertical lip lines, with a lifespan of about 12 months. Finally, Vollure is the longest-lasting lip filler option with results lasting up to 18 months.
The good news is that when your lip fillers begin to fade, you can simply return to ZPS for additional treatment. Many ZPS patients receive lip filler injections on a regular basis to preserve their plump lips without any major side effects.
- Do Lip Fillers Feel Any Different Than Real Lips When Kissing?
Because lip fillers are natural substances found in the body, they are soft and when placed correctly should not form lumps or hard areas in the lips. Any bumps that do occur can easily be massaged away. Lip injections should not affect the nerves of the lips and therefore would not affect the sensation of kissing. Since the lips are quite sensitive, patients undergoing lip injections at ZPS get a topical numbing agent that minimizes pain or discomfort of the injection. Also, it should be noted that the filler material itself has a numbing agent that works as soon as it is injected, improving the overall experience of lip injection. Numbness from the injection and the topical cream generally last an hour so care must be taken during that time to not drink hot liquids and avoid accidentally biting your lips. While your partner may notice an increase in size and plumpness of your lips after treatment, the lips should feel relatively normal after the initial swelling disappears over a few days.
After that time, you can kiss away!
