“The “marriage” of Dr. Zenn and Mary Shaver is truly one made in heaven. I had been a patient of both for several years before they joined forces. Each is a clinical perfectionist, and the gift they both have is the ability to translate the wishes of their patients to beautiful, realistic outcomes.”

As you age, your face loses volume. This leads to flattening of your cheeks, sagging of your skin and formation of folds, lines and wrinkles. As time marches on, these changes only deepen. Mary Shaver is certified as an advanced injector of dermal aesthetic fillers. She uses non-surgical injectable dermal fillers for patients seeking to regain the youthful appearance of their face. These fillers can improve cheeks, lips, mouth area, crevices, lines, and wrinkles.

Is Filler Right for Me?

Many wrinkles in the face, especially around the eyes (think “crow’s feet”, “frown lines”, “elevens”) can be treated with a neurotoxin like Botox® to stop the muscle activity that causes them. Other lines do not occur because of underlying muscle activity; rather, the cause is loss of tissue structure and volume. Using fillers to plump up and revitalizes your face, returning youthful contouring and removing wrinkles. Mary Shaver uses a variety of HA (hydroxy acid) fillers and other services such as peels and micro-needling as potential treatments.

Zenn Plastic Surgery offers several different fillers – each with its own properties and suggested applications. Mary Shaver has extensive knowledge and experience with all products and will guide you as to which will be most beneficial for your particular areas of concern.

Juvéderm and the Juvéderm Family of Fillers

Juvéderm, Juvéderm Ultra, Juvéderm Ultra Plus, Volbella, Volure, Voluma

The Juvéderm® collection of dermal fillers treat multiple facial aging conditions and areas. Thanks to the hyaluronic acid (HA) injectable fillers’ formulation, you gain immediate facial volume. Each product differs in consistency and duration of action and can be used in different areas to achieve a beautiful result. These products also allow your skin to retain moisture better, feel softer and receive key nutrients it needs for a more youthful appearance.

Juvéderm

Juvéderm is an injectable dermal filler. Its key ingredient is hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring complex sugar that improves elasticity. This provides a smoother, more supple and younger appearance. In fact, your body produces its own HA. But over time and through the aging process, your natural supply of this acid diminishes.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Juvéderm dermal filler in June 2006. It specifically treats moderate to severe lines and folds, plumping to help you look younger and feel more confident.

Juvéderm Ultra

Standard aesthetic injectable filler. Used primarily for the treatment of:

  • Lip lines
  • Thinning lips

Juvéderm Ultra Plus

A thicker gel than its sister product Ultra. Used for more severe, deep facial wrinkles. Typically, injections are deeper into the skin than other dermal fillers. Used primarily in areas like:

  • Nasolabial lines, known also as smile lines which are the lines from your nose that extend to the corners of your mouth
  • Marionette lines, the lines that begin at the corners of your mouth & extend down toward your jawline
  • Deeply depressed areas in your cheeks

Volbella

Volbella® is a smooth, thin, easily spreadable gel, with the lowest concentration of HA filler. It’s a dermal filler used to non-surgically give a very natural appearing augmentation of the lips. This lip enhancement is made to plump the lips and to minimize fine lines on the lips.

“Fish lips” or overfilling of the lips is an unnatural appearance of the lips due to poor injection technique, not the filler material. This is one of Mary’s favorite areas to inject and her results look beautiful and natural. Used primarily in areas including:

  • Fine lip lines
  • Smooth the delicate skin under the eyes

Vollure

Vollure® is a versatile, mid-level injectable facial filler. Used to treat mild to moderate wrinkles and lines. Used to help restore a more youthful appearance in the lower face area. Like most injectable facial fillers, HAs allow for natural facial expression and movement. Typically used for things such as:

  • Nasolabial folds sometimes also known as laugh lines
  • Marionette lines or the parenthesis around the mouth

Voluma

Voluma® has the highest HA concentration of all the Juvéderm collection of products. This is a thick dermal filler gel placed deep near the bones of the face. It is used to help fight the effects of mid-face age related fat and bone loss that gives an aging face a hollow appearance. Thus, creating a face that appears more plump and tighter as if there were better bone structure and more natural fill in the face. This is a “non-surgical facelift” and easy way to get that rejuvenative boost. Usually used in:

  • Cheek
  • Cheek bone area
  • Chin and jawline

How do Juvéderm Aesthetic Injectables Work?

Juvéderm is injected into your mid-dermis to deep dermis using a small needle and is not painful. The dermis is where blood vessels, connective tissue, nerve endings, oil glands and sweat glands lie. Once injected, this biocompatible compound lifts and adds volume to targeted areas. In six to nine months, your body naturally absorbs the compound.

Its pliable gel consistency is what makes an injectable work so well. These newer generation fillers provide smoother and more natural looking results than past fillers. Your results also last a longer period of time, helping you maintain them between six and nine months. Subsequent treatments can last even longer since filler can be added to filler already present or in the phase of disappearing but not yet completely gone.

Restylane

Restylane® is another option for hyaluronic acid (HA) injection. It is similar to the Juvéderm line of products from a different manufacturer. In similar fashion, the product is injected into the skin with a small needle. It is used to plump the skin and to smooth away wrinkles and folds. Effects generally last six months and gradually disappear. If you are treated again at 4 ½ or 9 months after your first treatment, Restylane can last up to 18 months.

Radiesse

Collagen is the key to soft and supple skin in youth. Collagen is the protein that keeps facial skin tight, taught and youthful. Unfortunately, as we age collagen production decreases causing skin to sag.

Radiesse® is a collagen stimulator – it actually stimulates the body to make more collagen and encourages its growth. Amazing! The product itself is composed of calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres which are minerals found naturally in the body. The microsperes are surrounded by water-based gel. The dermal filler is injected into targeted areas on the face using a very thin needle and local anesthesia, if needed.

Following the Radiesse procedure, some bruising and swelling may occur, however, these symptoms will not last long. Most patients are able to return to daily activities fairly quickly. Results are apparent immediately, and due to the stimulation of new collagen production, they generally improve over time and last as long as one year, sometimes two. When the effects of Radiesse eventually begin to diminish, an occasional “touch-up” treatment can be received to maintain optimal results.

Radiesse is a wonderful option for those patients seeking help to smooth their wrinkles. Long-lasting and highly satisfying to patients, it is the first FDA-approved dermal filler for both face and hands. Mary has the expertise to know if a collagen stimulator like Radiesse would be best for you.

Sculptra Aesthetic

Sculptra® Aesthetic is another product that replaces collagen in the body but uses a different delivery protein. This FDA-approved injectable gradually replaces lost collagen—the most common protein in the body that is used to form a framework to support cell and tissue. Sculptra is a product that best delivered by an advanced injector; it requires special advance preparation.

How Much Does a Filler Treatment Cost?
