Breast Lift 101

As we get older, our skin stretches due to the loss of skin elasticity. And while we may notice these changes more on our face or hands, a woman’s breasts experience the same thing. Now combine the loss of skin elasticity and gravity. The weight of the breasts makes accelerates the droop and sag, sometimes to an unrecognizable position. Significant weight fluctuations, pregnancy, and genetics can also add to these changes. The bigger they are, the harder they fall!

A breast lift is designed to restore sagging breasts to their former shape and position. During a breast lift procedure, Dr. Zenn will remove excess skin and breast tissue from the breasts, lifting the breasts, and repositioning the nipple to a more natural, elevated location on the breast mound.

The Breast Lift Recovery Process

Breast lift recovery is surprisingly easy, with most patients returning to work within a week. One can easily hide any swelling or bruising that may still be present then but pain is not an issue. It may take up to 4 months for swelling to completely subside, before you see your final results. If you follow Dr. Zenn’s instructions, your recovery will be much smoother, and you could see final results as soon as two months. Typically, this is how the breast lift recovery progresses:

  • When you awake from surgery, you will be placed into a soft bra with light compression. These will be removed the next day when you see Dr. Zenn. You will then shower that day and continue to wear a sports bra for two whole weeks, 24/7.
  • During these first two weeks after a breast lift, women will likely experience swelling and bruising. This can be limited by minimizing activities the first week and only light activities or work the second week. It is important that you follow his instructions carefully and take all medications as prescribed. Most patients will get by on NSAIDs (Motrin, Aleve) and not require narcotics for more than a day or two.
  • During these initial weeks, Dr. Zenn recommends that his patients sleep on their back and avoid tummy and side sleeping. Some patients find a reclining chair to work well. Daily showering will keep your incision sites clean and prevent infection or complications.

Patients should be aware that since it takes a few months or more before all of the swelling subsides, you will not be able to wear underwire bras until then. And you may not need to wear them ever again!
